Coordinating International Patent Applications: A Shared Technical Record
International applications can share confirmed technical facts, but local claim strategies, documents and formalities still require separate review. Keep language versions connected rather than creating one supposedly universal international draft.
Choose the route before scheduling the documents
The WIPO PCT FAQ distinguishes direct or Paris Convention filing from the PCT route. A PCT application provides an international procedure; national or regional offices remain responsible for granting patents. It is not one application that automatically produces worldwide rights.
The FAQ explains typical national-phase timing, but each office's deadlines, language, fees and requirements need verification. Do not turn a commonly mentioned month count into a rule for every matter.
To locate a published PCT application before comparing national files, use the WIPO PATENTSCOPE search guide. A publication search does not complete international or national filing steps.
Keep a shared technical record
Record confirmed structures, steps, parameters, experiments, alternatives and original attachments. Identify the version used for each jurisdiction. Have the inventor confirm new technical information before deciding whether it can enter a particular application.
| Handover record | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Disclosure and attachments | Preserve factual provenance |
| Terms and signs | Align names and figure references |
| Jurisdiction differences | Explain why the text changes |
| Amendment basis | Separate original disclosure from new information |
| Docket and owners | Record event, trigger, responsible person and local confirmation |
Review each destination
Check subject matter, claims, disclosure and support, figures, abstract and procedural documents. Allowed wording elsewhere is a reference, not automatic compliance. When one translation changes, decide who else needs notification; do not silently turn it into the filed text for every related application.
For inventions or utility models completed in China, assess Patent Law Article 19 when planning foreign filings. Completion location, disclosures and priority should be evaluated early by the responsible practitioner.
Budget by stage
Separate drafting and translation, the international phase, national or regional phases, local representation and maintenance. Use current quotes and applicable fee information instead of an old comparative blog table.
Patent Task provides different target workflows. A language or format selection does not complete all filing formalities. Product differences, including the Japanese export scope, need their own check.
Must claims be identical in every country?
Do not require identical wording mechanically or change it without a basis. Retain technical provenance and obtain local review of the strategy. See the field/jurisdiction matrix, US documents and Japanese documents.
