03 / Patent search
AI-assisted patent search
Search patent documents by keyword, publication number or applicant. AI-assisted query translation supports selected sources; choose your jurisdiction and check relevant passages in the original documents.
01
Start with US documents and switch the scope as needed
02
Filter by applicant, publication date and IPC
03
See the source and retrieval status of every result
Coverage is limited to the connected data sources. It is not an exhaustive prior-art search, and a search with no results does not mean that no relevant patent exists.
Combine keywords with conditions
Technical keywords
Search beyond the title: parts, uses and the problem solved. Watch for documents that describe the same technology in other words.
Publication number and applicant
Narrow down from known numbers or related applicants, and check the source and bibliographic data on the detail page.
Publication date and IPC
Filter by date range and classification. Do not over-narrow at the start; use classes found in relevant documents.
Other jurisdictions
US documents are the default scope. Switch the scope where needed and check which data is available for it.
EXAMPLE / FICTITIOUS
From a technical question to a search plan
A teaching example written for this page. The terms and translations below are candidates to review, not live AI output, executed searches or verified patent matches.
Original research question
Which published documents describe a conveyor that stops when a temperature sensor detects a threshold?
Candidate plan and verification
- 1. Prepare candidate terms
- Separate the object (conveyor, belt conveyor), measurement (temperature sensor, thermal sensor) and response (stop, shutdown). For a German-language run, Förderband, Temperatursensor and Abschaltung are possible translations to check against relevant documents.
- 2. Choose fields and jurisdiction
- Try conveyor temperature stop in the keyword field with US as the scope. Record a separate run for European documents. Use a known identifier in Patent Number or a recorded name in Applicant; add IPC only after confirming a useful class.
- 3. Record what actually ran
- Keep the exact entered query, selected source, filters and any translated query the service shows. If a source is pending, partial or unavailable, record that status; do not turn it into a zero-result conclusion.
- 4. Check the original passage
- For a candidate you actually retrieve, record the full publication number and the claim, paragraph or figure supporting each feature. Check whether the temperature threshold really causes the stop. Verify the original document and any relevant legal-status record through the responsible office.

How it works
01
Define the purpose
Decide whether you are surveying a field, preparing to file or checking others' rights. Novelty and freedom-to-operate searches look at different things.
02
Record queries and documents
Keep the keywords, scope, period and publication numbers you found. Compare features and add missing conditions.
03
Confirm officially and with a practitioner
Coverage is limited, so do not finish a search here. Combine it with official databases and, where needed, a professional search.
FAQ
Can I search every US patent?
No. Only data from the connected sources is searchable, and completeness or currency is not guaranteed.
How much of the search uses AI?
AI assists query translation for selected connected sources. You still choose the keywords, jurisdiction and filters, then check the retrieved documents. This does not mean every source supports semantic search, or that the service automatically determines relevance, novelty or freedom to operate.
If nothing is found, can I get a patent?
Not necessarily. Relevant documents may be outside the coverage or use different words or classes. Patentability and infringement cannot be judged from result counts.
How does this relate to USPTO Patent Public Search?
Use Patent Task to organize leads, then confirm the original documents and status in the official databases using the publication numbers you found.
