SPECIFICATION / A DRAFT YOU CAN TRACE
Preparing and reviewing a patent specification
The specification explains how the invention is built and how it works. In Patent Task you organize the disclosure and prepare a first draft while checking how it supports the claims and the figures.
Three things to collect before drafting
01
A description the inventor has confirmed
Structure, connections, operation and what is still unknown. Keep cited prior art separate from facts about your own invention.
02
The elements the claims will recite
Decide what you want to protect, and make sure each element has support in the description.
03
Matching figures and numerals
Align what each figure shows with reference numerals and the terms in the text. Do not leave essential operation to the figures alone.
EXAMPLE / FICTITIOUS
Trace each claim feature back to the description
Take a fictitious apparatus with temperature sensor 10, controller 20 and conveyor 30. The disclosure only says that conveying stops when the measured temperature exceeds a set value; how the value is chosen and when conveying restarts are open.
| Claim feature | Support to check in the description | If the source is silent |
|---|---|---|
| Measuring a temperature | What sensor 10 measures and how it connects to controller 20 | Ask the inventor about position and measurement method |
| Comparing with a set value | When the comparison runs and how the set value is chosen | Record as open; do not invent values |
| Stopping the conveyor | The command from controller 20 to conveyor 30 and what happens after stopping | Confirm restart and fault handling |
If a draft adds "measured every second" or "90% safer" without a disclosure or measurement behind it, that statement needs checking. Do not keep AI suggestions as technical facts.
Check the structure of a US specification
Organize what each section needs to explain. Filling every heading does not by itself show enablement, written description or claim support.
- Title of the invention
- A short, specific name for the claimed subject matter.
- Technical field
- The kind of apparatus, method or system the invention concerns.
- Background
- Known approaches you have verified and their limitations. Check cited documents in the original.
- Summary
- The solution in general terms, consistent with the claims.
- Brief description of the drawings
- One statement per figure, using the figure numbers cited in the text.
- Detailed description
- How the parts work together: inputs, decisions, outputs and alternatives, with reference numerals.
- Claims and abstract
- Claims with antecedent basis and support; an abstract of the technical disclosure.
Generate, edit and check in Patent Task
Prepare the disclosure, confirm the drafting plan and the target office, then work through the documents. Compare each claim element with the description and figures and export the saved version to DOCX. Review indicators are not legal advice or a guarantee of grant.
Frequently asked questions
How is the specification different from the claims?
The claims define what is protected; the specification describes how it is built and works. Check where each claim feature is supported in the specification and the disclosure.
Can I start without every detail?
Yes. Keep open points open, review the drafting plan, then continue. Where facts are missing, ask for them rather than letting AI fill in numbers or test results.
