Preparing a Japanese Patent Application: Documents and Export Review

Updated · 3 min read· Patent Task Editorial Team

A Japanese application requires review of technical content, Japanese expression and submission material. Translating a Chinese or English draft can produce working material, but does not establish that Japanese filing requirements have been met.

If you need to find an existing Japanese document or its status first, start with the JPO / J-PlatPat search guide. This page focuses on preparing application material.

Keep the inventor's evidence

Retain the original explanation and organize the field, problem, means, implementation, alternatives and evidence of effects. Mark unknown items so translation does not turn assumptions into structures or measured results.

The JPO examination-guidelines page separates description, claims, patentability and amendments. It also states that the Japanese text prevails over ambiguity in the provisional English translation and warns that language versions can be updated at different times.

Review the document categories

ItemReview focus
ClaimsSubject matter, dependencies, terminology and support
DescriptionRelationship between problem, means and implementation
DrawingsActual images, figure numbers, signs and text references
AbstractConsistency with the description and a valid selected figure
Request form and formalitiesApplicant data, applicable attachments and filing requirements

This is an organizing checklist, not a conclusion that having the headings makes an application compliant.

Maintain one terminology record

Track source terms, Japanese terms, signs and locations. Check scope-bearing expressions such as optional, at least and unless in context. Fluency must not change the technical conditions.

After adding or removing paragraphs or figures, recheck references. A completed planning step is not proof that a usable image exists for every figure.

Patent Task's Japanese workflow

The Japanese workspace supports interview/disclosure preparation within the input stage and subsequent section-based drafting. It does not use the Chinese one-click full-draft workflow.

Japanese DOCX output contains four substantive documents: claims, description, drawings and abstract. It does not generate the patent request form (特許願) or submit directly to the JPO. Confirm entitlements and actual export contents, and prepare the remaining procedural material separately.

Is the export a complete filing package?

No. Check what was produced and what remains before the responsible person performs the filing review. See Japanese reference and amendment review and international handover.
